Bhopal: Booth Level Officers (BLOs) engaged in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Madhya Pradesh are facing multiple challenges, ranging from technical difficulties to excessive workload. Urban areas are particularly problematic, with voters difficult to locate, while rural areas struggle with poor network connectivity, delaying data uploads.
High Pressure on BLOs
The responsibility of distributing forms, verifying voter information, and uploading data to the official app falls entirely on BLOs. Many officers report being under significant pressure to complete the work within tight deadlines. Recently, a BLO in Shahdol reportedly passed away, with family members attributing the death to work-related stress, though officials have denied this claim. Reports of other BLOs falling ill have also surfaced.
Digital Challenges and Training Gaps
Some BLOs skilled in digital tools manage their tasks effectively. However, others face difficulties using devices, uploading data, or navigating the frequently updated app. A female BLO noted that she was newly assigned to the role without adequate training, and network issues often hinder the process.
Complicated Voter Records
BLOs are also struggling with voters whose names appear in multiple districts or wards. Mapping such voters consumes significant time, especially when the system fails to recognize records from other areas.
Urban vs. Rural Hurdles
In urban areas, locating voters is challenging due to frequent relocation and rented housing. Meanwhile, rural BLOs report difficulty accessing fields where laborers are working, often having to start early mornings or work late evenings during the cold season. In many villages, slow internet further hampers data uploads.
Time Constraints and Meetings
Meetings and phone interruptions further reduce effective working hours. BLOs report feeling stressed due to limited time and excessive workload, highlighting the pressing need for better support, training, and technical infrastructure.
