New Delhi: The political confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition in the Lok Sabha continues to intensify, with the issue now taking a sharper turn. After women MPs from opposition parties wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla raising concerns over alleged defamation and violation of parliamentary rights, women Members of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have also sent a letter to the Speaker, demanding strict action against opposition MPs.
In their letter, BJP women MPs urged the Speaker to initiate action under parliamentary rules against opposition members who, according to them, indulged in “shameful acts” inside the House on February 4, 2026, thereby tarnishing the image of India’s democratic institutions.
BJP MPs Describe February 4 Incident as “Unfortunate and Shameful”
The BJP women MPs, in their communication, referred to what they called one of the most “unfortunate and regrettable” incidents witnessed in the Lok Sabha chamber.
They alleged that opposition MPs not only entered the well of the House but also climbed onto the tables, tore papers, and threw them towards the Speaker’s chair.
The letter stated that such conduct was unacceptable and had brought embarrassment to parliamentary decorum.
Allegations of Opposition MPs Entering Treasury Benches
The letter further claimed that some women MPs from opposition parties crossed over with banners and placards in an aggressive manner.
According to the BJP MPs, the opposition members allegedly surrounded the Prime Minister’s seat and even entered the treasury benches, where senior ministers are seated.
The BJP women MPs noted that although the incident was highly provocative, they exercised restraint at the instruction of senior leaders, avoiding any confrontation.
They warned that the situation could have escalated into an unpleasant and dangerous episode if they had not remained calm.
Demand for Strict Action Under Parliamentary Rules
Calling the incident a serious breach of parliamentary discipline, the BJP women MPs appealed to Speaker Om Birla to take the strictest possible action under the rules against those responsible.
They expressed full confidence in the Speaker’s leadership, stating that the Lok Sabha was fortunate to have him as its custodian.
Opposition Women MPs Had Earlier Written to Speaker
Earlier on Monday, women MPs from opposition parties had also written to the Speaker, expressing deep concern and anger over what they described as baseless and defamatory allegations made against them.
The opposition letter reportedly also raised the issue of the violation of parliamentary rights.
The opposition MPs’ letter was written on the letterhead of Tamil Nadu MP S. Jyothimani and was signed by several prominent leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, R. Sudha, Jyotsna Charandas Mahant, and Varsha Eknath Gaikwad, among others.
Political Tensions Continue in Parliament
The exchange of letters reflects the rising tension and deepening divide between the government and the opposition in Parliament, as both sides accuse each other of misconduct and undermining democratic norms.
With the Speaker now receiving representations from both sides, the issue is expected to remain a major point of political debate in the coming days.
