A fresh political controversy has erupted after former Vice President Hamid Ansari described Mahmud of Ghazni as a “Hindustani looter” during a recent interview, triggering strong reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP has accused Ansari and the Congress ecosystem of attempting to “whitewash historical atrocities” committed against India’s cultural and religious heritage.
BJP’s Strong Rebuttal
Reacting sharply, BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla questioned the intent behind the statement and alleged that the Congress and its ideological ecosystem have once again sought to glorify historical figures associated with temple destruction.
“Those who looted and desecrated our temples are now being presented in a misleading manner. This shows a repeated pattern of the Congress ecosystem in justifying atrocities committed against Hindus,” Poonawalla said.
He further alleged that the same ecosystem has previously defended controversial figures and is now attempting to reframe the historical narrative surrounding Mahmud of Ghazni.
Reference to Somnath Temple
Poonawalla specifically referred to the destruction of the Somnath Temple, stating that Ghazni’s invasions were historically documented acts of plunder.
“The individual who dared to attack and loot Somnath is now being indirectly defended. This is not academic debate but deliberate distortion,” he added.
Political Escalation Ahead of Key Debates
The BJP spokesperson also accused the Congress of opposing cultural events linked to India’s historical pride, including commemorations related to the Somnath temple, and claimed that such statements reflect ideological hostility towards India’s civilizational identity.
Taking to social media platform X, Poonawalla shared a video clip criticizing what he termed the “Congress ecosystem’s selective interpretation of history.” In his post, he alleged that the same ecosystem remains silent on historical crimes while attempting to recast invaders in a favorable light.
Congress Yet to Respond
As of the time of filing this report, the Congress party had not issued an official response to the allegations or to the BJP’s criticism of Hamid Ansari’s remarks.
Political Temperature Rises
The controversy has once again brought historical interpretation into the political spotlight, with both sides trading sharp accusations. With debates over history, identity, and legacy becoming increasingly prominent in political discourse, the issue is expected to intensify in the coming days.
