Mumbai, Maharashtra: The recent municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra have delivered a major victory for the BJP, while Shiv Sena also recorded significant success in Thane district. In Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli municipal corporations, the two parties contested as an alliance, whereas in Ulhasnagar, they went head-to-head.
Alliance Secures Majority
The BJP-Shiv Sena Mahayuti has emerged as the dominant force in Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli, winning the majority of seats. Despite the alliance’s numerical advantage, internal discussions over the mayoral posts are ongoing.
Contests in Kalyan-Dombivli and Ulhasnagar
In Kalyan-Dombivli, negotiations between BJP and Shiv Sena are still underway for the mayor’s position. In Ulhasnagar, the winning candidates from both parties were separated by only a single-digit margin. Here, MP Srikant Shinde successfully formed a majority by allying with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, and Shiv Sena is reportedly planning a similar strategy in Kalyan, with support from five MNS councillors. Shiv Sena under Eknath Shinde is close to achieving a majority in Kalyan-Dombivli, giving it a strong claim to the mayoral post in both municipalities. There is also a high possibility that Shinde’s Shiv Sena may stake a claim for Thane’s mayoral position.
Final Decision After Chief Minister Returns
The BJP has announced that the Mahayuti alliance is poised to hold the mayoral positions in Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Ulhasnagar. The final decision will be made after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis returns from Davos, following a joint meeting with Eknath Shinde. Detailed discussions with BJP state president Ravindra Chavan confirmed that the Mahayuti alliance has secured a majority in all three municipalities. Based on this mandate, the BJP leadership has indicated that the alliance will form the mayoral governments across these municipal corporations.
