Nagpur: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has scored a resounding victory in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Election 2026, reaffirming its political dominance in the city. As vote counting concluded on Friday night, the BJP crossed the majority mark with ease, winning 102 seats in the 151-member civic body.
The Congress emerged as a distant second, securing 34 seats, while other parties failed to make a significant impact. Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managed to win one seat each, whereas 10 seats went to independent and other candidates.
The results mark yet another emphatic mandate for the BJP, which has been in control of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation continuously since 2007. In the previous civic elections, the party had won 108 seats, while Congress had secured 28.
Gadkari–Fadnavis Factor Proves Decisive
Political analysts attribute the BJP’s sweeping victory to the strong influence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, whose home city is Nagpur, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the sitting Member of Parliament from the city. Their combined political stature, organisational strength, and grassroots outreach played a crucial role in consolidating voter support.
Nagpur also holds symbolic importance as the headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), further strengthening the BJP’s ideological and organisational base in the region.
Early Trends Indicated BJP Clean Sweep
From the initial rounds of counting, the BJP maintained a commanding lead. By late afternoon, the party had crossed the 100-seat mark, leaving the opposition far behind. Despite minor fluctuations during counting, the overall trend remained firmly in BJP’s favour throughout the day.
Opposition Faces Major Setback
The Congress, which hoped to improve its civic presence, failed to challenge the BJP’s dominance and remained confined to 34 seats. Other regional and national parties also struggled to gain traction in the city’s fiercely contested civic battleground.
With this decisive mandate, the BJP is set to continue governing Nagpur’s civic body, strengthening its grip on urban Maharashtra ahead of upcoming political contests.
