Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing repeated disappointments in Punjab’s by-elections. Ahead of the 2027 state assembly elections, the party is focusing on strengthening its organizational structure, intensifying criticism of the Bhagwant Mann government, and exploring potential alliances to improve its electoral prospects.
Despite achieving significant victories in several other states, BJP has struggled to gain traction in Punjab. Recent by-elections, including the one in Tarn Taran, have added to the party’s concerns. Senior BJP leaders are conducting regular visits across the state, reviewing strategies, and preparing for the upcoming assembly elections. Speculation over a possible alliance between BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal is also growing, while BJP is simultaneously making preparations for all 117 assembly constituencies independently.
Mission 117: Strengthening the Organization
Ashwini Kumar Sharma, BJP’s Punjab executive president, emphasized that by-elections often reflect a different political environment and that the scenario will change during the state assembly elections. He explained that BJP is working to establish strong organizational presence in every constituency. Party workers are actively engaging in outreach programs, connecting with local communities, and laying the groundwork for the 2027 polls.
Targeting Corruption and Law & Order Issues
Sharma alleged that corruption continues unabated in Punjab, while the drug problem remains rampant. He claimed that the state government has failed to control the narcotics trade and maintain law and order. BJP plans to launch extensive campaigns to reach out to citizens, highlighting the governance and development achievements of BJP-ruled states to contrast with the current Punjab government.
Promises Unfulfilled by Punjab Government
The executive president also pointed out that the Punjab government has yet to deliver on promises made during the 2022 elections, such as providing honorarium payments for women. Opposition parties have criticized the government, asserting that its anti-drug initiatives are mostly symbolic, limited to advertisements and photo-ops, without disrupting the supply chain. BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh added that the government’s actions are largely performative, while gangsters continue to operate with impunity, leaving citizens vulnerable. Sharma emphasized that Punjabis are seeking peace, security, and stability, which the current administration has failed to provide.
