New Delhi: Tensions are escalating in Assam ahead of the likely Assembly elections in April, with a political slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. The controversy began when Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi referred to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as “Assam’s Jinnah.” In response, BJP leaders struck back strongly, with national spokesperson Shehzad Jai Hind calling Gogoi a “Pakistan agent” and “Pakistan Miyaan.”
BJP Hits Back at Gaurav Gogoi
On Thursday, Shehzad Jai Hind posted on X (formerly Twitter), attacking Gogoi for his remark. He wrote:
“Pakistan Miyaan Gaurav Gogoi says ‘Himanta is Assam’s Jinnah.’ Himanta is an Assamese. You are a Pakistan agent and a Miyaan.”
He further accused Gogoi of avoiding major questions while targeting the Chief Minister and issued eight pointed questions to the Congress MP.
Eight Questions BJP Posed to Gaurav Gogoi
- Why did your wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, work in Pakistan between March 18, 2011, and March 17, 2012?
- Even after returning to India, why was her salary facilitated by Pakistani citizen Ali Tauqir Sheikh?
- Did you travel to Pakistan with colleagues in December 2013? During your stay, why were you digitally unavailable? Why did you visit cities including Rawalpindi, home to Pakistan Army headquarters?
- What do your close relations with your wife Elizabeth Gogoi and Pakistani ISI agent Ali Tauqir Sheikh indicate?
- When the investigation started, why did Ali Tauqir Sheikh delete all his tweets and even deactivate his Twitter account?
- Your wife is a British citizen. Why did you not declare in your election affidavit that your wife and children are foreign nationals?
- Given that Elizabeth Gogoi is a Christian and a British national, don’t Assam’s citizens have the right to know about the religion and nationality of your family, considering you are an MP from the state? Why did she change her religion, especially in light of past work and alleged financial links in Pakistan that raise national security concerns?
- Do you deny that these facts raise serious national security questions, as also highlighted by Bhupen Bora?
Gogoi’s Original Comment
Earlier, Gogoi had said that Bhupen Bora left the Congress due to the policies of Himanta Biswa Sarma and labeled the Chief Minister as “Assam’s Jinnah,” sparking the current backlash.
