Jabalpur: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a show-cause notice to its Jabalpur municipal vice-president, Anju Bhargava, following a public outcry over a viral video showing her verbally abusing a visually impaired woman inside a church. The party has sought a written explanation from Bhargava within seven days, warning of disciplinary action.
The controversy erupted after a video circulated widely on social media, in which Bhargava is seen arguing aggressively with a blind woman during a protest at a church in the Gorakhpur police station area of Jabalpur on December 20. The incident triggered sharp criticism and caused embarrassment for the party in Madhya Pradesh.
Party Takes Disciplinary Action
Jabalpur BJP district president Rajesh Sonkar issued the notice, stating that Bhargava’s conduct and choice of words were “highly objectionable and unbecoming of a responsible party office-bearer.” The letter noted that such behavior goes against the values and discipline expected from a BJP leader and has damaged the party’s image.
“You are seen using indecent and inappropriate language against a visually impaired woman in the video circulating on social media. As a responsible office-bearer of the BJP, such conduct is unacceptable,” the notice read, directing her to submit a clarification within seven days.
What Led to the Controversy
The incident occurred when members of Hindu organizations, including Bhargava, entered the church alleging religious conversion of blind children. Protesters created a ruckus, leading to a confrontation with the police. However, those present at the church denied the allegations of forced or illegal conversion.
During the chaos, Bhargava confronted a visually impaired woman seated inside the church. In the viral footage, she is heard making deeply offensive remarks, including telling the woman that she was blind in this life and would remain blind in the next. She also accused her of facilitating religious conversion and allegedly grabbed her face, prompting intervention by the police and others present.
Growing Criticism
The remarks drew widespread condemnation from civil society groups and political observers, who described the comments as insensitive, demeaning, and discriminatory toward persons with disabilities. The BJP’s swift issuance of a notice is being seen as an attempt to contain political fallout and distance the party from the incident.
The matter remains under scrutiny as the party awaits Bhargava’s response. Further action is likely depending on the explanation submitted, party sources said.
