Bihar’s Landslide Victory Sends Ripples to Delhi: Strong NDA Mandate to Boost Rajya Sabha Position

Patna: The resounding victory of the NDA in Bihar’s 2025 assembly elections is set to have an impact far beyond the state, reaching the corridors of power in Delhi. While the win does not imply any immediate bargaining between Nitish Kumar and the BJP, it strengthens the NDA’s position in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament.

Assembly Results Affect Rajya Sabha Math
Bihar’s assembly election outcomes directly influence the distribution of the state’s Rajya Sabha seats. Bihar has 16 Rajya Sabha seats, of which the NDA currently holds 10, while the opposition controls six—five with the RJD and one with the Congress. Many of these members’ terms are due to end in April and July next year, making the assembly results critical for the upper house.

Strengthened NDA Majority in Rajya Sabha
The NDA currently has 133 members in the Rajya Sabha, with 103 from the BJP alone. Losses in states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Haryana have already weakened the opposition, and Bihar’s landslide further tilts the balance. Analysts suggest that the Modi government is likely to face fewer hurdles in getting its bills passed in the upper house in the coming months.

Opposition Faces Strategic Challenges
Political experts say the opposition will now face significant challenges in accommodating senior leaders from states where they suffered electoral defeats. Yashwant Deshmukh, a senior political analyst, notes that the opposition’s internal adjustments will be complicated, particularly in states like Bihar, further reducing their effectiveness in the Rajya Sabha.

Bihar’s electoral mandate thus not only reshapes the state’s political landscape but also strengthens the NDA’s influence at the national level.
