Patna:
Noted Bihar strongman and Janata Dal (United) MLA Anant Singh will take oath as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. Following permission granted by the Patna Civil Court, Singh will be brought from Beur Central Jail to the Assembly under heavy security arrangements. Immediately after the oath-taking ceremony, he will be sent back to judicial custody.
Anant Singh, popularly known as “Chhote Sarkar,” is currently lodged in jail in connection with the Dular Chand Yadav murder case, in which he has not been granted bail. He has been allowed to step out of jail solely for the purpose of taking the oath and will not be permitted to participate in any other Assembly proceedings.
With his oath, all 243 members of the Bihar Assembly will have completed the mandatory swearing-in process. Singh is the last MLA to do so, as the remaining 242 legislators had already taken oath earlier.
High-Security Movement from Jail to Assembly
Authorities have put in place elaborate security arrangements for Singh’s movement from Beur Jail to the Assembly. A large contingent of police personnel, including Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and escort vehicles, will accompany him. The entire route has been secured, and the Assembly premises are under strict CCTV surveillance.
Supporters have been barred from gathering in and around the Assembly complex. The court has directed that Singh be returned to jail without any delay after the oath ceremony.
Bail Plea Yet to Be Heard
Anant Singh has been in judicial custody for nearly three months. After his bail plea was rejected by a lower court in the murder case, he approached the Patna High Court. However, the judge assigned to hear the matter recused himself, and the case is currently in the process of being listed before another bench. Until relief is granted, Singh will remain in jail.
Won Mokama Seat by Big Margin
Despite being incarcerated during the elections, Anant Singh registered a decisive victory from the Mokama Assembly constituency. He defeated RJD candidate Veena Devi by a margin of 28,206 votes, securing 91,416 votes in total. His victory reaffirmed his political influence in the region, with supporters reportedly celebrating on a large scale following the results.
The oath-taking of Anant Singh under judicial custody marks a rare and closely watched moment in Bihar’s political landscape, highlighting the intersection of law, politics and electoral mandate.
