Bihar: Mithila Touch at Oath Ceremony – Maithili Thakur and Newly Elected MLAs Take Swearings in Traditional Attire

Patna: The 18th Bihar Legislative Assembly commenced its first session on Monday with the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs. Pro-tem Speaker Narendra Narayan Yadav administered the oath to all members on behalf of Governor Arif Mohammad Khan. The oath was made available in five languages – Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, and Maithili – reflecting the state’s linguistic diversity.

Maithili Thakur Steals the Spotlight
The youngest MLA from Alinagar in Darbhanga, Maithili Thakur of the BJP, made headlines by taking her oath in Maithili, donning a vibrant yellow saree and a traditional Madhubani-painted paag (headgear). The popular folk singer described the occasion as a “special moment” marking a new chapter in her political journey.

Surendra Ram’s Green Cap Draws Attention
From Garhwa constituency in Saran district, RJD’s Surendra Ram defeated his opponent by 12,804 votes. Wearing a distinctive green cap, he became an eye-catching presence at the ceremony.

‘Radhe-Radhe’ Gamcha Marks Sanjay Singh’s Oath
First-time MLA Sanjay Kumar Singh, who won from the Mahua constituency in Vaishali, wore a ‘Radhe-Radhe’ inscribed gamcha around his neck, making a unique statement during the swearing-in.

Mithila Representation Strengthened
Other MLAs from the Mithila region also honored local traditions. Sujit Kumar (Raj Nagar, Madhubani) and Ramchandra Prasad (Haiyaghat, Darbhanga) wore Madhubani-painted gamchas and paags while taking their oaths in Maithili. Vinay Kumar Chaudhary of Benipur emphasized that serving the public is a daily responsibility beyond elections.

Second Term MLAs Show Party Symbols
Murari Mohan Jha, re-elected from Kevati, wore a paag and gamcha adorned with lotus symbols, reflecting the BJP’s emblem, while taking his oath in Maithili.

The ceremonial first session beautifully blended Bihar’s rich cultural heritage with the political spirit, highlighting the pride of Mithila in the state assembly.
