Bihar Government May Use MP-MLA Funds for Cemetery Fencing, Deputy CM Confirms

Patna, Feb 9, 2026: The Bihar government is considering using MP and MLA funds for fencing and securing cemeteries across the state, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary indicated during the 2026 budget session of the Bihar Assembly.

Responding to a starred question by MLA Sarwar Alam, Chaudhary said that fencing work for cemeteries could now be funded directly through legislators’ development funds. The issue was raised in the Assembly amid opposition protests, as members sought to highlight the government’s inaction over the past several years.

Nine-Year Gap in Review:
MLA Sarwar Alam drew attention to the fact that in Kishanganj and Kochadhaman, no meetings regarding cemetery fencing had been held in the last nine years, despite the sensitive nature of the issue. He stressed that District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police should convene such meetings periodically, especially when FIRs have been filed related to vandalism or threats. MLA Saurabh added that in Paliganj, only one cemetery had been fenced so far.

MPs and MLAs Empowered to Act:
AIMIM MLA Akhtarul Imam asked why fencing work could not be executed directly using MLA and MP funds, noting that bureaucratic delays often hamper such initiatives. In response, Chaudhary clarified that legislators already have the authority to fund such works and assured the Assembly that steps would be taken to implement the fencing program.

The announcement underscores the Bihar government’s commitment to improving security and infrastructure around cemeteries while empowering elected representatives to play a more active role in local development.
