Bihar Farmers Set to Prosper with Makhana and Marigold Farming; Nitish Government Opens Funds for 29 Districts

Bihar’s government has taken a significant step to boost the income of farmers by promoting Makhana (fox nut) and marigold cultivation. With the rising demand for these crops, the government aims not only to create new employment opportunities but also to enhance farmers’ earnings.

Nitish Government Unlocks Funds for Makhana and Marigold Cultivation

Darbhanga: In a move to increase farmers’ income and encourage cash crops beyond traditional farming, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government has prepared a master plan to expand Makhana and marigold cultivation. The state has released a list of districts selected under the Makhana and Marigold Development Plans. While the Makhana Development Plan covers 10 districts, the Marigold Development Plan extends to 29 districts across the state.

Ten Districts Selected for Makhana Cultivation

Bihar dominates Makhana production globally, and the government seeks to expand this further. The selected districts for Makhana farming are Katihar, Purnia, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Supaul, Araria, Madhepura, Saharsa, and Khagaria.

A total of ₹14.70 crore has been approved for the scheme, and an initial release of ₹7.68 crore has already been sanctioned to ensure timely support to Makhana farmers.

Marigold Cultivation to Bloom Across 29 Districts

Alongside Makhana, the government is investing significantly in flower cultivation, with a focus on marigolds. Under the Marigold Development Plan, ₹5.16 crore will be spent to strengthen farmers economically.

Districts Selected for Marigold Cultivation

The plan targets the following 29 districts: Araria, Arwal, Aurangabad, Banka, Begusarai, Buxar, Darbhanga, Gaya, Gopalganj, Jehanabad, Kaimur, Katihar, Khagaria, Lakhisarai, Madhepura, Nalanda, Nawada, West Champaran, Patna, East Champaran, Purnia, Samastipur, Saran, Sheikhpura, Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Siwan, Supaul, and Vaishali.

This initiative is expected to open new avenues for farmers, increase rural employment, and make Bihar a hub for Makhana and marigold production.
