Gopalganj: In Bihar, the formation of the new government has triggered an active phase of inspections by ministers and MLAs across the state. While the Nitish Kumar government pushes ahead with its promise of providing one crore jobs, elected representatives have intensified monitoring of public service institutions. One such inspection in Gopalganj has now sparked major administrative action.
Model Hospital Under Spotlight Again
The Gopalganj Model Hospital has frequently made headlines. Recently, a video went viral on social media showing patients reportedly being treated under mobile phone flashlights inside the hospital’s grand building. Some clips even suggested doctors were forced to perform procedures in the operation theatre using mobile lights. (NBT Online does not verify the authenticity of the viral videos.)
This controversy led BJP MLA from Gopalganj Sadar, Subhash Singh, to conduct a surprise inspection of the hospital. During the visit, the MLA expressed serious concern over the absence of several doctors from their duty stations.
MLA Rebukes Civil Surgeon
Upon noticing multiple irregularities, MLA Singh confronted the Civil Surgeon present at the spot. He also raised questions about the functioning of the pathology department. The MLA alleged that patients were being charged money for blood tests and that doctors were recommending tests that the hospital did not even have the facilities to perform.
Following this inspection, the Civil Surgeon of Gopalganj, Dr. Virendra Prasad, initiated formal action.
Notice Issued to Absentee Doctor
A notice has been issued to Dr. Danish Ahmed, a medical officer posted at the Model Hospital. The doctor has been asked to provide an explanation within 24 hours regarding his absence from duty. The notice, dated December 6, has caused significant unease among the medical staff.
More Complaints Emerge — Pathology Staff Under Scanner
In another letter, the Civil Surgeon has made serious allegations against pathology department staff member Vikas Pathak. The notice states that a female patient was allegedly asked to pay ₹500 for a blood test. Additionally, the on-duty doctor reportedly directed the patient to undergo a thyroid test — despite the hospital lacking thyroid testing facilities.
This indicates a clear pattern of patients being pressured to get tests done externally, raising suspicions of malpractice and exploitation.
Hospital Administration on High Alert
Both notices — one issued to the Deputy Superintendent (DS) Dr. Shashi Ranjan Prasad and another to Dr. Danish Ahmed — have heightened tension within the hospital administration. Doctors and staff are now under strict scrutiny.
MLA Subhash Singh Defends His Inspection
Speaking on the matter, MLA Singh stated that he had been receiving complaints about irregularities for several days.
“Patients’ families often called me to report that doctors were missing from duty. This compelled me to inspect the hospital myself,” he said.
A Wake-Up Call for Accountability
The incident has triggered a serious debate on healthcare governance in Bihar. With Bihar’s new government under pressure to improve public services, such inspections and subsequent actions are expected to continue across the state.
