Dhaka: Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, has publicly thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for saving his mother’s life during last year’s attempted coup in Bangladesh. Speaking to news agency ANI, Wazed revealed that during the July 2024 rebellion, terrorists had plotted to assassinate the ousted Awami League leader, and India played a crucial role in protecting her.
Wazed said:
“India has always been a true friend. During difficult times, the Indian government effectively saved my mother’s life. I will always remain grateful to Prime Minister Modi for this.”
Threats During the Coup
According to Wazed, terrorists would have killed Sheikh Hasina if she had remained in Bangladesh. His statement comes just days after the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh sentenced Hasina to death for crimes against humanity. The charges included inciting rebellion, ordering killings, and failing to prevent atrocities during the July 2024 uprising.
Currently, Sheikh Hasina is safely in India, at an undisclosed location. She had initially fled to New Delhi and then reached Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad following the fall of her government on 5 August 2024. The Bangladeshi government has demanded her extradition, which Wazed criticized, stating:
“Extradition requires following judicial procedures. Bangladesh is currently governed by an unelected, unconstitutional, and illegal government.”
Alleged Manipulation of Trial
Sajeeb Wazed further accused the Yunus government of manipulating legal procedures to convict Sheikh Hasina. He alleged that:
- She was denied the right to choose her defense attorney.
- Her attorney was barred from attending court proceedings.
- Seventeen judges were replaced before the trial, with new appointees lacking experience and politically affiliated.
Wazed’s statements highlight the political turmoil and judicial controversies surrounding Sheikh Hasina’s trial, as well as the critical role played by India in her protection.
