Senior Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh minister Mohammad Azam Khan, currently lodged in Rampur jail, has resigned from the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust. His wife and former MP Dr Tanjeen Fatima, and son and former SP MLA Abdullah Azam, have also stepped down from their official positions in the trust.
Following their resignations, a new executive committee has been constituted to ensure the smooth functioning of the trust, which runs Jauhar University and Rampur Public Schools.
New Office Bearers Appointed
As per the revised structure, Nikhat Aflak, Azam Khan’s sister, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the trust, while his elder son Mohammad Adeeb Azam Khan has been named the Secretary.
University Registrar Dr S.N. Salam confirmed the development, stating that the restructuring was carried out in accordance with trust rules and aimed at avoiding administrative difficulties.
Azam Khan’s Dream Project
The Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust is widely regarded as Azam Khan’s flagship and dream project. He played a key role in establishing and expanding the trust and previously served as its Chairperson. Dr Tanjeen Fatima held the position of Secretary, while both Adeeb Azam and Abdullah Azam were members of the trust.
Legal Pressure Behind the Decision
Sources indicate that the resignations come amid mounting legal scrutiny on both Azam Khan and the Jauhar Trust. Multiple investigations related to the trust are currently underway. Azam Khan and Abdullah Azam are presently in jail in connection with the dual PAN card case, among other legal matters.
Officials stated that the incarceration of key office bearers had been affecting the day-to-day operations of the trust. To prevent administrative hurdles and ensure continuity, the decision was taken to formally separate Azam Khan, his wife, and his younger son from the trust’s management.
Trust to Continue Operations
Registrar Dr Salam said the newly formed executive body would ensure uninterrupted functioning of the trust’s educational institutions. “The reconstitution of the trust is an administrative step. The institutions will continue to function as usual under the new leadership,” he said.
The development marks a significant shift in the governance of the Jauhar Trust, which has remained at the center of political and legal attention in recent years.
