Kolkata, 15 Dec 2025: Politics may value experience, but age is no barrier. Nitin Nabin, 45, has been appointed as the National Working President of the BJP, making him the party’s youngest national leader. In the upcoming 2026 elections, he will face seasoned veterans like Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who is 83 years old. The age gap between the BJP and Congress presidents stands at 38 years.
Why BJP Chose Nitin Nabin
Nitin Nabin, a five-time legislator and minister in the Bihar government, is considered one of the brightest young faces in the party. Compared to other state-level leaders in Bihar—such as RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav (36) or JDU’s 74-year-old national president—Nabin brings youthful energy and organizational skills. Political analysts note that despite BJP’s strong performance in Bihar, leadership gaps have prevented the party from claiming the Chief Minister’s post. By appointing Nabin as working president, the BJP aims to showcase a dynamic and capable leader.
Electoral Challenges Ahead
Nitin Nabin’s first major test will be in West Bengal, where he will take on 70-year-old Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, aged 38, has played a significant role in elections, winning continuously since 2014. In Tamil Nadu, Nabin will compete with actor Vijay, 48, who is leading a new party in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Comparing National Leaders’ Ages
Other major political leaders in India are older than Nitin Nabin. For instance:
- Prashant Kishor (Jan Suraj) – 48
- Akhilesh Yadav (SP) – 52
- Mayawati (BSP) – 69
- Arvind Kejriwal (AAP) – 57
- Leaders of DMK, CPI, CPM, Telugu Desam, and AIADMK are all above 70.
With assembly elections scheduled in March-April 2026, Nitin Nabin has the opportunity to prove his organizational skills and strategic acumen. A strong performance, especially in West Bengal, could solidify his position and elevate him above his rivals within the BJP.
