Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma: “Even If I Offer ₹1 Lakh, No Muslim Will Vote for Me”

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sparked controversy with his remarks on the voting patterns of the Muslim community in the state. Speaking on a television program, Sarma claimed that regardless of government incentives or financial schemes, Muslim voters in Assam will not support him.

Referring to Bihar’s recent women-focused welfare scheme, where ₹10,000 was provided to 21 lakh women voters, Sarma said, “Even if I offer ₹1 lakh, not a single Muslim voter will choose me.” When asked to clarify, he specified that he was referring to the “Miya Muslim” community. He added that while some members of this community have praised his work—even offering to donate kidneys in support—they would never vote for him.

Voters Choose Ideology Over Benefits
The Chief Minister emphasized that electoral support in Assam is driven more by ideology than by government schemes. “It’s a simplistic assumption that offering schemes will automatically secure votes. While implementing welfare programs is necessary, assuming that they guarantee electoral support is a misconception,” Sarma said.

Demographic Concerns in Assam
Sarma also raised concerns about Assam’s changing demographics. Citing government estimates, he said the Muslim population in Assam was approximately 38% in 2021, and with a continued growth rate of 4-5% per decade since 1961, it could reach 40% by 2027. He warned that if the Muslim population exceeds 50%, other communities may face existential threats.

Despite his strong statements, Sarma clarified that his government maintains good relations with both Miya Muslims and women in Assam. He asserted that even if Muslim voters largely support the Congress, his government is confident of securing victory. However, he stressed that those who are neither Assamese nor Indian are not considered part of his electorate.
