Kolkata/New Delhi: A day after the NDA registered a sweeping victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shifted his focus to West Bengal, declaring that the next major political battle will be fought there. Addressing party workers in New Delhi, PM Modi said that Bihar’s historic mandate has paved the way for the BJP’s rise in Bengal ahead of the crucial 2026 Assembly elections.
“The Ganga flows into Bengal only after passing through Bihar. Bihar has created the path for BJP’s victory in Bengal,” Prime Minister Modi said, signaling the start of BJP’s Mission Bengal.
“BJP Will End Jungle Raj in Bengal”
PM Modi congratulated the people of West Bengal and vowed to uproot what he described as “jungle raj” in the state. He emphasized that the energy from Bihar’s mandate would now strengthen the BJP’s resolve to win Bengal.
He highlighted BJP’s recent electoral performance, noting major victories in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi after the Lok Sabha elections. He said that the party’s growing support across the country shows a strong desire for stability and development.
Bengal’s Political Context
West Bengal is slated for Assembly elections in March–April 2026. The BJP is currently the principal opposition party, having won 77 seats in the 2021 elections. The majority mark in the 294-member Assembly stands at 148.
PM Modi reminded workers that despite major gains in 2021, the mission remains incomplete, and Bengal must now prepare for a decisive political shift.
TMC in Power Since 2011
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, ended Left Front rule in 2011 when it won 184 seats. Mamata Banerjee became Chief Minister for the first time.
TMC strengthened its hold in 2016 with 211 seats and secured its third consecutive mandate in 2021 by winning 215 seats.
The 2026 elections will be a direct contest between the TMC—seeking a fourth term—and the BJP, which aims to form the government in the state for the first time.
