A fresh controversy has erupted within the Congress party ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Party ticket aspirants, who had submitted ₹5,500 each (₹500 form fee + ₹5,000 deposit) two years ago, are now being asked to pay the same amount again as the nomination process restarts — sparking widespread resentment among loyal workers.
Several former applicants have raised their voices, questioning the move:
“We already deposited the money back in 2022. Why should we pay again? Return our earlier amount first!”
Party’s clarification
Congress spokesperson Suresh Rajhans said the issue has been brought to the attention of the party’s leadership and that a final decision will be made soon.
Over 700 aspirants in 2022
During the 2022 BMC election cycle, over 700 individuals had applied for Congress tickets across the 227 municipal wards. According to party sources, more than 1,150 new applications have been received this year as the election preparations resume.
“Refund our money!” echo across party offices
Notably, Subhash Yadav ‘Barafwale’ from the Worli constituency — who has since joined the Shinde faction — has publicly demanded that Congress refund his ₹5,000 deposit. Many other former applicants have raised similar demands, yet no refund has been processed so far.
With the BMC polls approaching, what began as a procedural issue has now turned into a case of internal discontent and disillusionment among Congress cadres.
