“When the World Seems Foggy, Remember There Are Systems That Land Safely,” Says Anand Mahindra, Praising Scientist Shubha V. Ayyangar

New Delhi: Industrialist Anand Mahindra has shared an inspiring tribute on social media to Dr. Shubha V. Ayyangar, the 71-year-old scientist recently honored with the Padma Shri 2026. Dr. Ayyangar has developed critical technologies that enable safe aircraft landings in challenging conditions like fog, rain, dust, and other uncertainties.

A lesson in resilience and innovation

Posting on the social media platform X, Mahindra wrote, “I am deeply impressed by Dr. Shubha V. Ayyangar because she literally helps planes land safely in fog, while most of us are still learning how to navigate life’s uncertainties.”

He continued, “A topper in both her BSc and MSc, she received unwavering support from her parents, who encouraged her passion for science at a time when girls rarely pursued it. She dedicated over 40 years at CSIR–NAL, leading the team that developed a vision system tailored for India’s fog, rain, dust, and unpredictable weather.”

Mahindra concluded with a motivational note: “When the world seems foggy, remember that someone has built systems to ensure others can land safely. That is my Monday motivation.”

About Dr. Shubha V. Ayyangar

According to reports from TOI, Dr. Ayyangar completed her BSc (Hons) and MSc in Physics from Central College, Bengaluru, securing top ranks in both degrees, before joining NAL (National Aerospace Laboratories) in 1974. Inspired by her father’s belief in women’s higher education, she pursued a lifelong career in science, continuing her work even after her father passed away during her MSc.

The youngest of nine siblings, Dr. Ayyangar considers her family as her strength. Even after retirement, she continues to advise institutions and mentor scientists, reflecting her unwavering dedication to scientific advancement.
