New Delhi: While northern cities like Delhi continue to grapple with poor air quality during the winter months, popular hill stations are offering travelers a much-needed breath of fresh air. According to the latest data from AQI.in, tourists are flocking to destinations such as Shimla, Manali, and Kullu for cleaner, healthier air this weekend.
Real-time readings from 9 December show Shimla recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 33, falling within the ‘Good’ category. PM2.5 levels stood at 20 µg/m³, indicating low pollution. The combination of clear skies, low humidity, and moderate winds helped disperse pollutants, keeping air quality well below health risk levels.
Further north, Manali and Kullu registered an AQI of 18, with PM2.5 concentrations between 11–12 µg/m³, among the cleanest readings in the region. Cold weather, open valley landscapes, and consistent airflows contributed to minimal particulate pollution, making these locations ideal for weekend travelers seeking fresh mountain air.
Nainital, while slightly different, recorded an AQI of 74, classified as ‘Moderate,’ with PM2.5 levels at 44 µg/m³. Although higher than Himachal Pradesh’s hill towns, Nainital’s air remained considerably cleaner compared to major plains cities during the harsh winter season.
The contrast between hill stations and urban centers highlights the utility of real-time monitoring tools like AQI.in when planning trips. While factors such as temperature shifts, wind direction, and local activity can quickly alter air quality, current readings suggest that several popular weekend gateways are offering relatively clean and health-friendly air.
Tourists are advised to check AQI.in regularly for updates before visiting, as conditions can change hour by hour. As of now, Shimla, Manali, Kullu, and Nainital stand out as ideal winter retreats for short trips with safe, breathable air.
