Weather Update – January 22, 2026: Severe Cold Alert from Delhi to Kashmir, Snowfall Warning in Himachal Pradesh

A major weather change is expected across northern India today, as a Western Disturbance begins to impact the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall and snowfall across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh. Light cloud cover is expected between Kashmir and Uttarakhand.

Northern Plains to Experience Cold Spell

The Western Disturbance, as it moves over the Western Himalayas, will draw moisture from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, intensifying precipitation. Fog is likely in parts of Punjab and nearby areas during the first half of the day.

Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh may experience thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds at 40–50 km/h. While hilly regions may see localized activity today, plains are expected to remain largely dry until the weekend. Nighttime cloud cover will increase, and maximum weather activity in the plains is forecasted for tomorrow. Over the next two days, minimum temperatures in northwest India are expected to rise gradually by 2–4°C, providing slight relief from the ongoing cold wave.

Forecast for Delhi and Nearby Areas

Delhi is likely to see a slight increase in temperature, with maximum temperatures reaching around 21°C. Winds will change direction after noon, blowing moderately at 20–25 km/h at higher altitudes. Snowfall is expected in hilly areas, while dense morning fog may affect commuting in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

Weather Outlook for Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, districts including Lucknow, Kanpur, and Barabanki are expected to remain fog-free today. A gradual rise in temperature is predicted. However, the IMD has issued alerts for rainfall and strong winds from January 22–27. Some parts of western Uttar Pradesh may experience rain starting Thursday, while central and eastern regions could also see precipitation. Certain districts have been placed under an Orange Alert. Wind speeds of 30–35 km/h are expected, with temperatures rising by 2–4°C.

Weather Outlook for Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is expected to witness changing weather conditions in the hilly regions. Light rain and snowfall are likely on higher peaks above 2,800 meters. Districts such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Dehradun, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh may experience isolated light rain, while other areas are expected to remain dry.

The IMD has urged residents and travelers to remain cautious, particularly in hilly and fog-prone areas, as heavy winds, snow, and low visibility may pose travel and safety challenges.
