Weather Update: January 10, 2026 – North India Faces Severe Cold; Four States on Heavy Rain Alert

Northern India continues to reel under intense cold and dense fog, while southern states are likely to experience heavy rainfall due to a deep low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), relief from the cold wave and fog in northern India is unlikely in the coming days.

North India: Cold Wave and Dense Fog Persist
On January 10, northern and central India are witnessing severe cold, dense fog, and cold wave conditions. The IMD predicts dense fog during early mornings over northwest India and Bihar for the next 5–7 days. Meanwhile, central India, northeastern states, and parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to experience fog over the next 2–3 days.

Several regions including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Bihar, and parts of Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience “cold days” (Shit Divas) over the next 2–3 days. A widespread cold wave is expected in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Odisha, parts of northern interior Karnataka (January 10–11), Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar (January 10), and Rajasthan (January 11–14).

Heavy Rain Alert in Four Southern States
The deep low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka on January 9–10, with some areas likely to see continued rainfall on January 11. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal and adjacent sea areas.

Delhi-NCR: Severe Cold Continues
The IMD’s forecast indicates that the cold wave will persist over Delhi-NCR and parts of north and northwest India. Delhi recorded the coldest morning of the season on Friday, with minimum temperatures dropping to record lows, accompanied by light rainfall in several areas.

Uttar Pradesh: Cold and Foggy Days Ahead
Residents of Uttar Pradesh may get temporary relief from the severe cold and fog over the next two days due to intermittent sunshine. However, light drizzle is also expected in several areas. The western disturbance is expected to provide brief respite for the next two days. Lighter fog is expected in Lucknow and surrounding regions in the mornings.
