Weather Update | December 29, 2025North India Braces for Dense Fog, Cold Wave and Rain as New Year Approaches

The weather pattern across North India is set to change significantly ahead of the New Year, with dense to very dense fog, cold wave conditions, and rainfall predicted in several regions, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A fresh western disturbance is expected to impact the western Himalayan region from December 30, bringing rain and snowfall and influencing weather conditions in the plains as well.

The IMD has issued alerts for dense to very dense fog during night and early morning hours over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana–Chandigarh and western Uttar Pradesh till December 31, while eastern Uttar Pradesh may continue to witness foggy conditions till January 1. Cold day conditions are also likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while Bihar is expected to experience an intensified cold spell on December 29.

Rain and Snowfall in Himalayan States

Due to the active western disturbance, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to receive rain and snowfall from December 30 onwards. The impact of this system will extend to the plains, with light to moderate rainfall expected over Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand between December 31 and January 1, marking a wet start to the New Year.

Delhi-NCR Weather Outlook

The national capital is expected to welcome the New Year with rain. IMD forecasts cloudy skies over Delhi on December 31, followed by light rainfall on January 1. Dense fog is likely to prevail in several parts of the city during the morning hours on December 29. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 22–25°C, while the minimum may drop to nearly 7°C. An orange alert has been issued for fog-related conditions.

Uttar Pradesh: Cold, Fog and Rain Ahead

Uttar Pradesh is also set for a cold and damp start to the New Year. While the weather is expected to remain largely clear till December 31, dense to extremely dense fog is likely to persist across many districts. IMD has issued a rainfall alert for January 1 and warned of cold day conditions in isolated areas.

  • Jharkhand: Cold wave conditions persist, with a yellow alert issued for seven districts. Minimum temperatures have dipped below 10°C in several areas, though a gradual rise is expected over the next three days.
