New Delhi: Northern India is waking up to a cold wave and dense fog affecting daily life across major cities, while parts of Tamil Nadu face continuous rainfall and hill stations remain on snow alert.
Fog and Cold in Northern Cities
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for dense fog in ten key northern cities, including Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Tundla, Chandigarh, Delhi, Nainital, Amritsar, and Shimla. Morning visibility is expected to be very low, making driving hazardous. Delhi-NCR woke up to a foggy Monday morning, and temperatures are expected to dip further in the evening.
The IMD has also issued a cold wave alert for Delhi, with minimum temperatures expected to reach 4°C, about 1.6°C below normal. Humidity levels are high in the morning, increasing the perceived chill.
Rain and Fishermen Advisory in Tamil Nadu
Southern India is experiencing rainfall due to the active northeast monsoon, particularly in Tamil Nadu, which is expected to continue until 12 December. Weather experts attribute this to a low-pressure system near the southern Kerala coast.
The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the southern Tamil Nadu coast, Mannar Gulf, and Kanyakumari Sea until 10 December due to rough seas.
Cold Alerts Across Other States
- Bihar: Dense fog and cold wave alerts in 10 districts, including Patna, Bhagalpur, Purnia, Darbhanga, Gopalganj, Bhojpur, Kishanganj, Araria, and Gaya. Winds may reach 15-20 km/h. A cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature falls 4.5°C–6.4°C below normal.
- Rajasthan: Partly cloudy conditions expected, with minimum temperatures slightly rising by 2–3°C, influenced by a western disturbance.
- Madhya Pradesh: Bitter cold continues, with minimum temperatures dropping to 4°C for the first time this season.
