New Delhi:
Following rainfall and snowfall in Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, northern India is experiencing a sharp drop in temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of dense fog and cold wave conditions, affecting Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, with Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh also likely to face severe cold.
Northern States Shiver Amid Fog and Cold
Strong winds following precipitation in the northern hill states have intensified the chill. The IMD predicts dense to very dense fog during the night and morning hours in Punjab (till 27 December), Uttar Pradesh (23 and 25–28 December), and Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi (24–27 December).
The department further warned that eastern and western UP, central Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar may experience extremely cold conditions due to the cold wave. Such weather could significantly affect daily life and health, particularly for the elderly and children.
Delhi Weather
Monday morning began with thick fog in Delhi, bringing chilly temperatures and a shiver-inducing start to the day. By afternoon, the sun emerged after three days of cloud cover. Tuesday is expected to be mostly clear, with light to moderate fog in the morning and strong winds at ground level (15–25 km/h).
- Maximum Temperature: 22°C
- Minimum Temperature: 10°C
By 24 December, winds are expected to remain strong, with the maximum dropping to 18–20°C and minimum to 8–10°C. From 25–28 December, skies will remain mostly clear, with morning fog persisting.
Uttar Pradesh
Temperatures in UP continue to plunge sharply, with dense fog expected across the state, creating cold day-like conditions. Cities like Lucknow, Noida, and Ghaziabad are witnessing increasing cold due to western winds. The day is expected to remain dry, with fog appearing intermittently in some areas.
Bihar
Residents are bracing for extreme cold, with the IMD predicting cold day conditions across northwest, southwest, and central parts for the next 3–4 days. An Orange Alert has been issued to caution the public.
Jharkhand
The IMD has issued fog alerts for 16 districts. Dense fog and cold wave effects are expected to persist for the next six days, with temperatures continuing to drop. Five districts have already recorded maximum temperatures below 20°C, raising concern for residents.
