Weather Update – 14 January 2026: Relief from Intense Cold Expected Across India

After weeks of biting cold, northern India may finally see some relief. Traditionally, Makar Sankranti marks the turning point of winter, as the sun begins its northward journey. This year, however, the change is expected to be gradual, with temperatures rising slightly over the next couple of days. Morning fog may still pose a challenge intermittently.

Northern India: Clouds, Cold Waves, and Fog

Today, on 14 January, northern parts of the country are expected to remain under the grip of cold and dense fog. Weather experts indicate that while winter’s hold is slowly easing, there is no major shift in conditions yet. Hilly regions, including the western Himalayas, are likely to experience cloud cover throughout the day and night.

Cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Bhopal, Lucknow, Patna, and Ranchi may witness light fog in the morning, while localized fog is also possible in areas around Gwalior, Bharatpur, and Agra.

Snowfall in the Hills

The Meteorological Department predicts a new Western Disturbance approaching on 15 January, which is expected to trigger a series of weather systems bringing substantial snowfall in higher altitude regions between 15 and 30 January. However, this will not affect Makar Sankranti itself.

In Punjab and northern Haryana, light to dense fog is expected in several areas, including Karnal, Ambala, Panchkula, and Chandigarh. Similar conditions may occur in northwestern Rajasthan and northwestern Uttar Pradesh.

Weather in Uttar Pradesh

Several districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, Moradabad, Rampur, Saharanpur, Najibabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, and Bulandshahr, will experience similar conditions. Fog is expected to clear by late morning, around 10–11 AM, improving visibility.
