
New Delhi, January 7, 2026: Northern and central India continue to shiver under the grip of a cold wave, with no relief in sight for the next 5 to 7 days. Many regions are also experiencing dense fog, disrupting daily life and traffic.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the morning hours over northwestern, central, and eastern India are expected to remain foggy and extremely cold. Several areas in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are witnessing severe cold conditions.
Temperature Highlights
- In Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, the minimum temperature dropped to 3.3°C.
- Srinagar recorded –1.6°C, while Sonamarg in central Kashmir experienced the coldest night at –10.1°C.
- Gulmarg recorded –7.6°C, Pahalgam at –7.2°C, and Kahzgund at 0.1°C.
- Temperatures in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and northeastern states are hovering between 5–10°C.
Dense Fog Disrupts Life
Dense fog has significantly reduced visibility in parts of UP, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, with some areas reporting visibility as low as 50 meters, affecting road and air travel.

- Chandigarh: 4–7°C | 18–19°C
- Jaipur: 6–8°C | 18–19°C
- Guwahati: 11–13°C | 22–24°C
Heavy Rain Alert in Southern India
While northern India shivers, southern states face rainy conditions due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. Tamil Nadu is likely to experience thunderstorms and heavy rainfall from January 8–11, with an ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ warning issued for January 9–10. Kerala and Mahe are also expected to witness heavy rains on January 10.
Citizens are advised to take precautions against the severe cold in the north and heavy rains in the south.
