The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for eight states, warning of rainfall and storms. Snowfall is expected in mountainous regions, further intensifying the cold wave. Citizens have been advised to wear warm clothing and take necessary precautions.
Cold Wave Intensifies After Rain
Rain across several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, has led to a sharp drop in temperatures. The IMD has forecast gusty winds of 40–50 km/h during this period. Heavy snowfall and rain are expected in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, prompting an ‘Orange’ alert for Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, and Lahaul & Spiti districts.
Delhi-NCR Weather
From 28 to 30 January, moderate fog is expected to persist in the National Capital Region (NCR). Temperatures in Delhi on 28 January are expected between 12°C and 18°C. On 29 and 30 January, maximum temperatures are likely to hover around 18–19°C, with minimums near 9°C. Meteorologists note that while rainfall and strong winds may temporarily improve air quality, they will also increase the chill factor. Residents are advised to take precautions against the cold and adverse weather conditions.
Uttar Pradesh Outlook
Cold conditions have intensified across Uttar Pradesh. Light drizzle was recorded in Lucknow on Wednesday morning, while Noida and Ghaziabad experienced rainfall. Isolated hailstorms may also occur in several districts. The IMD warns that the cold wave could persist over the next couple of days, lowering nighttime temperatures further. A yellow alert for rainfall has been issued for 1 February, with cloudy skies and light to moderate rain possible in several regions.
Rajasthan Weather
A strong western disturbance is affecting south-western Rajasthan, with moisture inflow from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Eastern parts of Rajasthan, including Kota, Jaipur, and Bharatpur divisions, may experience rainfall and isolated hail. From 28 January, most areas are expected to remain dry, but northern winds could lower temperatures by 3–4°C. Dense fog is likely in some areas on 29–30 January. Another western disturbance may bring light rain to northern and eastern Rajasthan on 31 January and 1 February.
Southern States Outlook
Southern states are expected to remain mostly dry from 28–30 January, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. However, light to moderate rain is likely in these regions on 31 January and 1 February due to a low-pressure system. Strong surface winds are expected in the seas, particularly in southern Tamil Nadu coastal areas, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin Sea, with speeds reaching 40–50 km/h. Similar conditions are expected on 29–30 January.
