Weather Alert for January 8, 2026: Severe Cold Wave Hits 29 Cities, Heavy Rain Forecast in 3 States

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in three southern states while a severe cold wave grips 29 cities in northern India on January 8, 2026. Citizens have been advised to exercise caution, particularly in northern plains and hilly regions, as extremely low temperatures and dense fog are expected.

Heavy Rainfall in Southern States

IMD has forecast intense rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, and fishermen have been instructed to stay away from the coast. Winds in these areas may reach 30–40 km/h, adding to the hazardous conditions.

Severe Cold Wave in Northern India

Northern India is experiencing one of the harshest cold waves in recent years, affecting 29 cities. In Uttar Pradesh, cities including Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Bijnor, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Agra, Aligarh, Tundla, and Gautam Buddh Nagar will face extreme cold.

Delhi residents should be particularly cautious, as winds blowing at 15–20 km/h in the morning could pose health risks. Dense fog is expected on Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and Akshardham Highway.

Other regions under cold wave alert include:

  • Haryana: Panipat, Gurugram, Sonipat
  • Punjab: Firozpur, Barnala, Amritsar, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Patiala, Gurdaspur
  • Himachal Pradesh: Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur, Solan

Ranchi: Max 19°C | Min 7°C – Cold wave warning, dense fog in Palamu, Gumla, Kodarma, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Hazaribagh.

  • Himachal Pradesh: Heavy snowfall likely in Tabo, Kalpa, Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, Atal Tunnel Rohtang, Koksar; Shimla Max 12°C | Min -1°C, Manali Max -2°C | Min -19°C.

Cold Conditions in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh

  • Rajasthan: Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Shri Ganganagar, Bharatpur, Sikar, Churu, Alwar, Jhunjhunu under extreme cold; Jaipur morning temperature 6°C.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Rajgarh, Datia, Shahdol, Umaria, Khajuraho, Ujjain, Shivpuri experiencing severe cold; Bhopal 9°C at 5 AM.

IMD advises residents to dress warmly, avoid prolonged exposure to cold, and exercise caution while traveling, especially in foggy conditions.
