
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for freezing temperatures, dense fog, and a cold wave across North India on January 7, 2026. Delhi-NCR, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram, is expected to experience severe cold and thick fog in the coming days, affecting daily life and travel.
North India to Face Severe Cold Wave
From January 6-7, regions in Eastern and Western Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and the Ganga plains of West Bengal may experience Severe Cold Days (Sheet Divas). Between January 7-10, a cold wave is likely to affect Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and parts of Chhattisgarh. The IMD has also warned of dense morning fog for the next 4-5 days in northwestern, central, eastern, and northeastern India.

Rajasthan Faces Severe Cold and Fog
Most parts of Rajasthan continue to face intense cold and dense fog, impacting public life. Many districts, including Jaipur, have declared school holidays due to the cold. The IMD predicts a further drop in minimum temperatures by 1-2°C in the next one to two days, with cold waves likely in northern districts.
Severe Chill in Jammu & Kashmir
In Jammu & Kashmir, the cold persists, with Srinagar recording a minimum of -4°C, Gulmarg -8.6°C, and Pahalgam -6.8°C. The IMD forecasts no major western disturbances until January 20, indicating limited chances of heavy snowfall in the region for the next two weeks.
Rain and Snow Alerts in Other States
- Tamil Nadu: Light rain with thunder and lightning expected on January 8-9. Heavy rain warning for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe on January 9-10.
- Himachal Pradesh: Light rain or snowfall predicted in higher altitudes on January 7.
- Bihar: Dense fog may affect districts including West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj, potentially disrupting road, rail, and air transport.
IMD Advisory: Residents are advised to take precautions against severe cold, avoid travel during dense fog, and keep updated on local weather alerts.
