A deep chill has set in across India, from the mountainous regions to the plains, as a severe cold wave grips the country. The biting winter has made life difficult for people, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of rain, snowfall, and dense fog in several states.
North India Faces Severe Cold and Fog
Northern India, including Delhi-NCR, is experiencing intense cold. Four states—Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh—have been issued warnings for moderate to heavy rainfall and snowfall. In addition, scattered showers are expected in these regions on 28 December, with intermittent rain likely in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 27–28 December.
The IMD has also issued dense fog warnings for 22 cities in North and East India. Bihar’s Patna, Gaya, Purnia, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Begusarai, and Darbhanga are expected to witness dense fog, while visibility in Ranchi, Jharkhand, may drop to 50 meters. In Uttar Pradesh, cities including Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Aligarh, Muzaffarnagar, and Barabanki face similar warnings. Haryana’s Gurugram, Sonipat, and Panipat, as well as Punjab’s Amritsar and Faridkot, may experience visibility below 50 meters due to thick fog.
Delhi Weather Forecast
The IMD predicts that from 25 December, both minimum and maximum temperatures in Delhi will continue to fall. On 24–25 December, the minimum temperature is expected to range between 7°C and 9°C, with dense morning fog likely.
Uttar Pradesh Weather Outlook
Cold conditions will persist across Uttar Pradesh in the coming days, with dense to very dense fog expected over the next four days. On Wednesday, 32 districts, including Balrampur, Shrawasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, and Saharanpur, are under dense fog alerts. Other areas such as Bareilly, Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur, Pilibhit, and Shahjahanpur will also experience thick fog.
Bihar Weather Outlook
Bihar continues to reel under an intense cold wave. With minimal day-night temperature variation, the chill is particularly harsh. Patna, Arwal, Aurangabad, and 11 other districts are currently experiencing “cold day” conditions, which are expected to persist for the next 3–4 days. Dense fog is also forecast in several parts of the state. Gaya recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the past 24 hours at 7–8°C.
Uttarakhand Weather Outlook
Uttarakhand’s plain areas, including Dehradun, have seen slight temperature increases due to clear skies, while hilly regions continue to experience cold conditions. Dense fog may disrupt daily life in the plains. On Tuesday, Udham Singh Nagar recorded “cold day” conditions due to thick fog. Over the next three days, the state is expected to have dry weather, though foggy conditions may persist in the plains. Dehradun recorded a maximum of 25.9°C and minimum of 8.4°C, while Udham Singh Nagar recorded a maximum of 13.7°C and minimum of 7.2°C.
