
New Delhi, February 23, 2026: Widespread violence has erupted across parts of Mexico following the reported killing of notorious cartel leader “El Mencho.” The unrest has prompted the Embassy of India, Mexico City to issue a security advisory for Indian nationals residing in or traveling to affected areas.
According to reports, supporters of the cartel have taken to the streets, torching vehicles and government property, and attempting to disrupt law enforcement operations. Security forces have launched extensive operations in multiple regions to restore order.
Areas Under Security Watch
The Indian Embassy has advised citizens to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary movement, especially in the following regions:
- Jalisco State (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara)
- Tamaulipas State (including Reynosa and surrounding municipalities)
- Michoacán State
- Guerrero State
- Nuevo León State
Authorities have reported road blockades, heightened police activity, and incidents of arson in these areas.
Embassy Advisory: “Avoid Unnecessary Movement”
In its official statement shared on social media, the Embassy urged Indian nationals to:
- Avoid areas with visible police or security operations
- Stay indoors unless absolutely necessary
- Remain vigilant and monitor local media for updates
- Follow instructions issued by local authorities
- Avoid crowded places and public gatherings
- Keep family and friends informed about their safety through phone, text, or social media

“El Mencho,” widely considered one of the most powerful and wanted drug traffickers in Mexico, reportedly headed a dominant criminal organization. Following news of his death during a military operation, violent reactions were reported in several states, with public infrastructure and vehicles set ablaze.
As security forces continue operations, the situation remains tense. The Indian Embassy has assured that it is closely monitoring developments and will issue further updates as necessary.
