New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic move, US President Donald Trump has formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to become a member of the Gaza Peace Board, signaling a new opportunity for strengthening India-US ties. The invitation comes after last year’s planned visit of PM Modi to the United States was cancelled, during which External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented India.
A letter from the White House addressed to PM Modi stated:
“As Prime Minister of the Republic of India, it is my distinct honor to invite you to join this historic and ambitious effort to advance peace in the Middle East and adopt a bold new approach to resolving global conflicts.”
The letter highlighted the roadmap announced on 29 September 2025, a comprehensive 20-point plan to end the Gaza conflict, which was immediately endorsed by Arab nations, Israel, Europe, and global leaders. The plan received further support on 17 November 2025, when the UN Security Council unanimously passed Resolution 2803 welcoming the initiative.
The core of this initiative is the Peace Board, envisioned as one of the most influential international bodies to date, operating as a transitional governance mechanism aimed at uniting nations committed to building lasting peace. The White House emphasized that participation in this board is an honor for countries demonstrating leadership and investment in a safe and prosperous future for coming generations.
India’s Growing Diplomatic Role
India’s inclusion in this diplomatic process underscores New Delhi’s rising significance on the global stage. It highlights India’s strong relations with both Israel and Palestine and its capacity to play a constructive role in peacebuilding.
Background: Gaza Peace Agreement of October 2025
On 13 October 2025, a historic peace agreement ended the two-year-long Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, facilitated by US mediation. As part of the agreement, Hamas released hostages, and Israel freed prisoners, culminating in a summit at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, where the Gaza Declaration was signed.
The peace deal was structured around a 20-point framework, addressing ceasefire terms, Gaza’s reconstruction, and long-term peace. The agreement also proposed the creation of a Board of Peace, to be co-led by President Donald Trump and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, tasked with overseeing its implementation.
This invitation to PM Modi is expected to set the stage for high-level diplomatic discussions between India, the US, and other key stakeholders involved in the Gaza Peace Board, reinforcing India’s role as a global mediator and peacemaker.
