Union Minister Clarifies Aravalli Hills Controversy, Accuses YouTube Channels of Spreading Misleading Information

New Delhi: Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav has addressed the ongoing controversy over mining in the Aravalli Hills, asserting that over 90% of the region is fully protected. He criticized certain YouTube channels and individuals for spreading misinformation regarding the “100-meter” safety zone, clarifying the actual provisions.

Strict Mining Regulations Remain in Force
Minister Yadav emphasized that there has been no relaxation in mining regulations in the Aravalli range, which spans four states—Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Gujarat—and covers 39 districts. Out of the total 1.44 lakh square kilometers, only 0.19%, roughly 2%, may be eligible for mining. The rest remains fully protected. He highlighted that legal scrutiny over Aravalli mining is not new; petitions have been ongoing since 1985, aimed at enforcing strict and clear mining regulations—a stance fully supported by the government.

Clarifying the ‘100-Meter’ Safety Zone
Addressing widespread confusion, Yadav explained that the “100 meters” does not refer to the top of the hills alone. Rather, it includes the base structure of the hill, even underground, ensuring that the entire area within 100 meters from the base remains fully protected. He warned against misinformation claiming that excavation from the top downward is permissible, calling it entirely false.

Protection Extends Between Hills
The minister clarified that even if the distance between two Aravalli hills is only 500 meters, the land between them is considered part of the Aravalli range and falls under protection. This ensures that both hills and the connecting land are safeguarded against mining or other disruptive activities.

Over 90% of Aravalli Region Now Protected
Following this definition, more than 90% of the Aravalli area is now classified as protected. Yadav stated that mining in Delhi’s Aravalli region is completely prohibited, and the government has been actively running the Green Aravalli initiative over the past two years. Areas designated as forest reserves and protected zones are under strict monitoring to prevent illegal mining and ecological damage.

Full Support for Supreme Court Guidelines
Minister Yadav reiterated that the government’s aim is not to hinder development but to preserve natural heritage, environmental balance, and future generations. The defined safety measures, based on Supreme Court directives and scientific standards, eliminate any ambiguity and ensure strict control over damaging activities.

With these clarifications, the government reaffirms its commitment to conserving the Aravalli Hills while promoting sustainable environmental governance across the four states.
