Umar Khalid’s Bail Plea Rejected by Supreme Court; Says ‘This Is Now My Life’

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the bail petition of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots, while granting conditional bail to five other accused with 12 stipulations. The court also ruled that Khalid and Imam cannot file another bail plea in this case for one year.

Following the rejection, Umar Khalid expressed his resignation to life in jail. His close friend and activist, Banojotsna Lahidi, revealed that Khalid reacted emotionally, saying that while he was happy for the others who were granted bail, he also acknowledged, “Jail is now my life.”

Lahidi shared Khalid’s reaction, stating, “I am very happy for those who received bail. It is a big relief.” When informed that she would visit him the next day, Khalid reportedly responded, “Alright, alright, come. This is now my life.”

Case Details
Umar Khalid was arrested by Delhi Police in September 2020 for allegedly conspiring to incite large-scale violence in Delhi in February 2020. He faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), along with Sharjeel Imam and several others, who are accused of conspiracy in the riots.

Delhi Riots: Casualties and Background
The 2020 Delhi riots resulted in multiple deaths and injuries to over 700 people. The violence erupted during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), leading to chaotic and uncontrollable situations in several areas. During a previous hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing Delhi Police, had described the 2020 violence as a well-planned conspiracy aimed at attacking national sovereignty, rather than a spontaneous communal clash.
