India’s Republic Day celebrations in 2026 are set to carry major diplomatic significance, as the top leadership of the European Union will attend the January 26 parade as Chief Guests.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa will represent the 27-member EU bloc at the event, marking a rare and symbolic gesture in India’s foreign policy outreach.
The visit will be followed by the India–European Union Summit on January 27, during which key discussions are expected on trade, strategic cooperation, and the long-pending India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Why This Invitation Matters
Inviting the EU’s highest leadership—rather than a single head of state—underscores New Delhi’s intention to treat the European Union as a unified strategic partner, not merely a collection of individual countries.
This move reflects India’s effort to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with Europe at a time when global power alignments are shifting and supply chains are being restructured. It also signals India’s willingness to play a larger role in shaping global trade, technology cooperation, and geopolitical stability.
Revival of India–EU Trade Talks
India and the European Union formally resumed negotiations on the long-stalled Free Trade Agreement on December 8 in New Delhi, after a gap of more than eight years. Both sides aim to conclude the talks by the end of this year.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated that substantial progress has been made and that a broad framework of the agreement is already in place. He reiterated that both parties are committed to finalising the deal at the earliest.
The progress of the talks was reviewed earlier this month by Goyal and EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, who described the discussions as “very positive.”
A Strong Political Signal
The presence of EU leaders at India’s most important national ceremony sends a powerful message of strategic convergence between New Delhi and Brussels. It comes amid growing cooperation in areas such as defence, technology, clean energy, digital governance, and supply chain resilience, particularly after the EU Commissioners’ visit to India in February 2025.
