In the early hours of Tuesday, a devastating multi-vehicle accident occurred on the Yamuna Expressway near Milestone 127, around 150 km from Delhi. Dense fog contributed to a collision involving seven buses and three cars, which subsequently caught fire, resulting in the deaths of approximately 10 people and injuries to 25 others. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as passengers struggled to escape the burning vehicles.
Eyewitness Accounts
One survivor recounted the terrifying moment: “It felt like a bomb exploded. I jumped from the bus with my family to save our lives.” Thick fog severely reduced visibility, contributing to the high-speed collisions. Several passengers were trapped inside, while others sustained burns and injuries as they attempted to escape.
Emergency Response
Police and district authorities rushed to the scene immediately after the accident was reported. Injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Those who were unharmed were provided government transport to reach their destinations safely.
Official Statements
Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar confirmed that four people lost their lives and 25 were injured, most of whom are receiving adequate medical care. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased.
Rising Highway Accidents
This accident is part of a growing trend of road mishaps in Uttar Pradesh, especially on expressways during early morning and night hours when dense fog reduces visibility. Recent incidents along Delhi-Dehradun (NH-9) and Yamuna Expressway have raised concerns over road safety during winter months. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, maintain safe distances, and reduce speeds under foggy conditions.
The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by poor visibility and high-speed travel on major expressways during winter.
