
New Delhi: Most parts of the country will continue to experience a cold wave and dense fog over the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned. The weather department has issued rainfall alerts for three northern states, which may cause disruptions. Delhi and several cities in Uttar Pradesh are also expected to witness severe cold and fog.
Rain Alert for Northern States
According to the IMD, rain is likely on 6 January in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, with higher intensity expected in elevated areas. Specific warnings include:
- Jammu & Kashmir: Doda, Budgam, Shopian (mountainous regions)
- Himachal Pradesh: Chamba, Rohtang, Kinnaur, Manali (high-altitude areas)
- Uttarakhand: Some areas may experience frost
In Tamil Nadu, rainfall warnings have been issued, and fishermen have been advised to exercise caution.
Cold Wave Hits 15 Districts in North India
Severe cold conditions will prevail in the following districts on 6 January: Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Amethi, Agra, Delhi, Nainital, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Dehradun, Moga, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Hoshiarpur. Residents are advised to take precautions, especially during early morning hours.
City-wise Weather Forecast:
- Delhi: Maximum 17°C, Minimum 7°C. Dense fog expected in the morning; sunshine in the afternoon. Travel requires caution.
- Lucknow, UP: Maximum 17°C, Minimum 8°C. Dense fog and cold wave conditions expected. Other districts affected include Gorakhpur, Deoria, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Ayodhya, Etawah, Agra, Muzaffarnagar, Barabanki, Bijnor, Saharanpur, and Moradabad.
- Patna, Bihar: Maximum 15°C, Minimum 9°C. Dense fog expected in the morning; cold wave warnings in Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Bhojpur, Buxar, Gaya, and Jehanabad. Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj, and Araria may experience dense fog.
- Ranchi, Jharkhand: Maximum 19°C, Minimum 6°C. Dense fog warnings for more than 10 districts including Devghar, Dumka, Godda, Giridih, Jamtara, Palamu, Garhwa, Latehar, and Ramgarh.
- Nainital, Uttarakhand: Maximum 14°C, Minimum 3°C. Frost likely in some areas; rain and snow possible in higher altitudes.
- Dehradun: Maximum 17°C, Minimum 5°C.
Other Major Cities:
- Mumbai: 29°C / 24°C
- Kolkata: 21°C / 12°C
- Chennai: 28°C / 25°C
- Jaipur: 20°C / 8°C
- Shimla: 12°C / -1°C
Himachal Pradesh: Chamba and Manali may see light rainfall. Manali is expected to record a maximum of -6°C and a minimum of -21°C.
Rajasthan: Moderate to dense fog expected. Cold wave warnings issued for Sikar, Sirohi, Pali, and Churu. Jaipur: 20°C / 8°C.
Madhya Pradesh: Temperatures will drop across the state. Bhopal: 21°C / 7°C. Panchmarhi and Naugaon may record temperatures near 2°C. Schools in 19 districts have been closed due to severe cold.
Residents are advised to take precautions against the cold wave, avoid early morning travel in foggy conditions, and stay updated with local weather advisories.
