Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the United States’ decision to reduce tariffs on India, expressing gratitude to President Donald Trump. Following this move, tariffs on “Made in India” products will be reduced to 18%, a step the Prime Minister described as highly positive for India’s 1.4 billion people. Both nations’ cooperation, he noted, is expected to benefit citizens and open new avenues for collaboration.
PM Modi Hails the Tariff Reduction
Speaking from New Delhi, PM Modi said he was delighted to speak with his “dear friend” President Trump and learn about the reduction in tariffs on Indian products. He thanked Trump for the decision, highlighting that it represents a positive development for all Indians.
“The collaboration between two of the world’s largest economies and democracies brings direct benefits to the people and opens new possibilities for joint progress,” Modi said.
Praise for President Trump’s Leadership
The Prime Minister also lauded President Trump’s leadership in promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity. Modi emphasized India’s full support for Trump’s peace initiatives and expressed confidence that the India-U.S. partnership will reach new heights in the coming years.
President Trump’s Statement on the Deal
Earlier, President Trump shared a detailed statement on his social media platform “Truth Social” about his conversation with PM Modi. He described speaking with Modi as “an honor” and called him “one of my closest friends and a respected leader of his country.”
Trump said the leaders discussed key issues including trade and efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He claimed that PM Modi agreed to reduce oil imports from Russia and increase purchases from the U.S. and potentially Venezuela, which he suggested would help resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where thousands are reportedly killed each week.
Bilateral Trade Agreement Between India and the U.S.
President Trump further stated that, following Modi’s request and mutual friendship, a trade agreement between India and the United States had been reached. Under the deal, U.S. tariffs on Indian goods will be reduced from 25% to 18%, while India will work towards eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers on U.S. products.
