India and Bangladesh are currently experiencing a period of diplomatic tension. In light of the prevailing security situation, the Indian government has asked the families of its mission officials in Bangladesh to return to India. However, Indian missions in the country continue to function normally.
Mission Families Recalled
The Indian government has instructed family members of officials posted at the High Commission and other diplomatic missions in Bangladesh to return to India. According to sources, the decision was taken after assessing the current security environment. Indian diplomatic missions and other posts, however, will continue their regular operations and remain fully functional. Bangladesh is set to hold general elections and a referendum on 12 February 2026.
Security Review as Needed
Following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, elections are being conducted under the administration of Mohammad Yunus. Sheikh Hasina’s party, the Awami League, has been barred from participating in these elections. Sources indicate that the Indian government may review the security situation further if necessary.
Recent Diplomatic Strains
In recent times, diplomatic unease has been visible between India and Bangladesh. Protests have taken place outside the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh following the murder of student leader Usman Hadi, highlighting concerns for the safety of Indian diplomats and missions. India summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner in Delhi, Riyaz Hamidullah, to express its concerns regarding the security of Indian missions in Dhaka.
Bangladesh, in turn, raised concerns over demonstrations outside its High Commission in Delhi, which included protests by members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal.
