New Delhi, January 21, 2026: Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albarez, currently on a two-day visit to India, held delegation-level talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During the meeting, Albarez highlighted India’s growing significance as a reliable international partner and emphasized the need to deepen bilateral cooperation.
Albarez stressed that finalizing the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would be a positive step forward. “For Spain, it is crucial to strengthen ties with a trusted country like India, a nation that respects international law, adheres to the principles of the UN Charter, and believes in multilateralism,” he said during the meeting in New Delhi.
The Spanish Foreign Minister also cited the collaboration between Airbus Spain and Tata Advanced Systems as a concrete example of bilateral cooperation, which both countries are keen to promote. He further mentioned that Spanish President Pedro Sánchez is expected to visit India soon, and he hoped that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would also be able to visit Spain in the near future.
Albarez underscored that Spain and India would continue to work together both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks. He expressed enthusiasm about India joining the Indo-Pacific initiative and presented a letter to mark this milestone. “We aim to upgrade our relationship into a strategic association—the highest level of friendship that Spain maintains with any country,” he added.
On the humanitarian front, Albarez appreciated India’s solidarity with Spain during difficult times. Minister Jaishankar reciprocated by offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the recent train accident in Spain and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
