
New Delhi: Delhi-NCR and several parts of North India are likely to witness rainfall around Republic Day. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), due to a western disturbance, light to moderate rainfall is expected in the western Himalayan region between January 26 and 28. Some areas may even see heavy rain or snowfall on January 27. Additionally, light to moderate rain is forecast over the northwestern plains and parts of Madhya Pradesh on January 27-28.
Yellow Alert for Seven Districts in Tamil Nadu
The IMD office in Chennai has issued a ‘Yellow’ alert for seven districts in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall in some areas. The bulletin cites a lower atmospheric circulation over southern India as the cause of rainfall. As a result, coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal may experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.
Snowfall Disrupts Jammu & Kashmir Transport
Jammu & Kashmir has seen significant snowfall and rainfall in the past 24 hours, causing major disruptions in air and road transport on Friday. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) stated on Saturday morning that its personnel and machinery are clearing accumulated snow to reopen the Srinagar International Airport. No flights operated on Friday, and the Srinagar-Jammu Highway remained closed. Traffic on the Srinagar-Leh Highway and Mughal Road is also suspended, with no official update on reopening yet.
Cold Snap Returns to Rajasthan After Rainfall
Following recent rainfall, Rajasthan is experiencing a sharp drop in temperatures, with several areas under the grip of a cold wave. The IMD reported that the past 24 hours recorded extremely cold conditions in several parts of the state, with light rain in Bharatpur and hail in some areas. The department forecasts that temperatures may fall further in the next couple of days, with minimum temperatures dropping by 3-5°C and maximum temperatures decreasing by 2-3°C due to northwesterly winds. The weather is expected to remain mostly dry in the coming days.
