“Should I Call It Fortune or Fate?” – Jaya Bachchan’s Remark Triggers Laughter in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: A lighthearted moment in the Rajya Sabha brought smiles to members on Tuesday when Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan addressed presiding officer Bhuvaneshwar Kalita. She said, “Whenever I come to speak, you are always on the chair. Now, I cannot tell whether I should call it fortune or fate.” Her witty remark drew laughter across the House, with both government and opposition MPs chuckling together.

A Rare Cheerful Atmosphere in Parliament
Unlike the often tense proceedings in the Lok Sabha, which have recently seen heated exchanges over issues such as Rahul Gandhi referencing former Army Chief Gen. M.M. Naravane’s unpublished book, the Rajya Sabha displayed a notably cheerful atmosphere. A video of the session went viral, showing MPs laughing and engaging in light-hearted interactions, highlighting a more congenial side of parliamentary proceedings.

Presiding Officer’s Reaction
Bhuvaneshwar Kalita, a Rajya Sabha member from Assam since 2020, appeared delighted by Jaya Bachchan’s comment and responded with folded hands. The camaraderie in the House was visible, and MPs from both sides of the aisle joined in the laughter, creating a moment of levity amid serious legislative business.

On the US-India Trade Deal and Budget
During her speech, Jaya Bachchan also touched upon current economic issues, including the US-India trade deal, humorously remarking, “You send us makhana, we will have to eat popcorn.” She further raised questions about the Union Budget, seeking clarity on the allocation for employment generation for 3.1 crore unemployed youth. Despite the opposition raising sharp questions on these topics, the Rajya Sabha maintained decorum, avoiding the disruptions commonly seen in the Lok Sabha.
