In a deeply disturbing incident in Delhi, a 14-year-old boy sexually harassed an American woman on a crowded Delhi Metro train. The incident has left the victim shaken and raised serious questions about safety and awareness in public spaces.
Incident Details
The young woman, visiting India to attend a friend’s wedding, was confronted by the teenager on the metro. According to her account, the boy initially asked for a selfie. When she agreed, he inappropriately touched her chest. Shockingly, the boy’s mother and sister were present, and the mother defended him, claiming, “He has never been so close to a fair-skinned woman before, so he got carried away.”
The victim, understandably distressed, confronted the boy and pushed him away. The mother’s reaction left her questioning the environment in which children are raised.
Impact on the Victim
Professor Gaurav Sabnis, of the Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, who guided the student before her visit, shared her account on social media platform X. She described how the incident marred her eight-day trip to India. “My colleagues were wonderful, and I had a memorable trip, but this unfortunate incident left me upset for days,” she said.
The woman also recounted that while she managed unwanted attention in other situations by firmly declining requests, this incident on the metro was entirely unexpected and distressing.
Broader Reflections
The victim expressed her disappointment, saying, “I loved your country and hoped to return, but after this, I do not think I will ever come back. I might avoid South Asia altogether. Now I understand the warnings I received beforehand. I feel deep sympathy for Indian women—do they face such experiences daily?”
This incident underscores the urgent need for public safety measures, awareness campaigns, and social responsibility to protect women and foreign visitors in India’s public spaces.
