Sheikh Hasina Blames Yunus Administration for Bangladesh’s Current Turmoil

Dhaka/New Delhi: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pinned the blame for the recent strain in India-Bangladesh relations on the Yunus administration. In an exclusive interview with Navbharat Times, Hasina expressed deep concern over the growing influence of extremist elements and attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh. She also criticized the upcoming parliamentary elections, describing them as largely symbolic and questioning the country’s democratic process.

Tensions Under the Yunus Administration
Hasina highlighted that under the Yunus government, Bangladesh’s diverse society is facing significant challenges. She noted that Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and Ahmadi Muslims have been particularly vulnerable to worrying incidents. She further alleged that the administration allowed mobs to surround Indian missions, stage protests, and intimidate diplomats, which she said has seriously harmed bilateral ties.

Concerns Over Parliamentary Elections
Regarding the parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12, Hasina said that the democratic process has been undermined. “These elections lack genuine democratic choices and are largely symbolic,” she stated, expressing concern over the marginalization of opposition voices. She also pointed out that individuals attempting to register nominations outside the ruling party or Jamaat-e-Islami framework are reportedly being targeted by police.

Remarks on Khaleda Zia’s Family
Hasina also addressed the return of Tarique Rahman, son of former PM Khaleda Zia, to Bangladesh. She remarked that the public is aware of his long stay in London and questioned his connection with the common people. She further accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of fostering close ties with extremist groups for short-term political gains. Hasina added that during her tenure, her government worked diligently to curb the influence of such elements, which, she claimed, now hold significant positions of power.

Hope for the Future
Despite the current challenges, Hasina expressed optimism that a return to democratic governance and rule of law in Bangladesh would restore cooperative ties between the two nations.
