New Delhi: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Shatrujeet Singh Kapur has been appointed as the new Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). He will hold the position until 31 October 2026, the date of his retirement.
Kapur succeeds the outgoing ITBP chief, Praveen Kumar, who has been appointed as the new Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF). Kumar, a 1993-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, will serve as BSF chief until 30 September 2030.
Shatrujeet Kapur, a 1990-batch officer of the Haryana cadre, was earlier serving as Haryana’s Director General of Police (DGP) before being relieved of the post last December. He also held the position of Chairman of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation in Panchkula.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- ITBP: The Indo-Tibetan Border Police is primarily responsible for guarding India’s northern frontiers, particularly along the Himalayan region. Its duties include border surveillance, counter-terror operations, preventing cross-border crimes, disaster management, relief operations, and VIP security.
- BSF: The Border Security Force protects India’s international borders, maintains peace and order along the borders, prevents smuggling and infiltration, conducts anti-terrorism operations, and participates in disaster management and relief efforts.
The appointments, issued by the Ministry of Personnel, mark a key reshuffle in India’s paramilitary leadership, strengthening the leadership at two of the country’s most important border security forces.
