Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has delivered a sharp warning to the Bangladeshi government over the recent outbreak of communal violence, following the brutal lynching and burning of Hindu youth Deepu Chandra Das in Mymensingh. Tharoor stressed that it is the responsibility of the Bangladesh government to restore law and order immediately, and if the police fail to act, the army must be deployed.
Tharoor highlighted the contrast between India and Bangladesh, pointing out that nationwide protests against the violence in India have remained peaceful, with no incidents of lynching or riots, demonstrating that dissent can be expressed responsibly in a democracy.
Tharoor’s Strong Reaction
Speaking from Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor condemned the mob violence in Bangladesh, describing it as “completely unacceptable.” He urged the government in Dhaka to take firm action, emphasizing that mere statements of regret or condemnation are not sufficient. “We want Bangladesh to do the same. They must stop the violence. It is their responsibility to ensure the streets are safe and people feel secure again,” he said.
“Police Not Enough? Send the Army!”
Tharoor delivered a blunt message to the Bangladeshi authorities: “Take control of the situation. If the police cannot manage it, deploy the army. But stop this nonsense.” He praised India’s democratic response, noting that even when counter-protests took place, they remained under control, demonstrating how protests should be managed without escalating into violence.
Impact on India-Bangladesh Relations
The murder of Deepu Chandra Das has sparked outrage across India, with large-scale demonstrations calling for justice. The incident has also strained diplomatic ties between the two nations, raising concerns about the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh. While the Bangladeshi government recently announced arrests related to the case, Tharoor’s remarks underline India’s demand for immediate, effective action to prevent further unrest.
A Call for Accountability
Tharoor’s comments come at a time when Bangladesh faces heightened internal tensions, and India continues to monitor the situation closely. The message is clear: violence cannot be ignored, and the responsibility to protect citizens lies squarely with the government.
