Senior Lawyers Represent Delhi Riots Accused, Targeted by BJP’s Kapil Mishra

Following the Supreme Court’s rejection of bail for Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case, Delhi Minister and BJP leader Kapil Mishra criticized the lawyers who defended the accused. While the apex court granted bail to five other accused, Khalid and Imam’s petitions were denied by Justices Arvind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria, citing the distinct nature of their cases.

Targeting the Advocates

Kapil Mishra said that prominent senior lawyers, including former Union ministers, appeared in court to defend the accused in the riots case, with several political parties also extending support. “The Supreme Court’s decision clearly shows that the Delhi riots were a premeditated conspiracy and the city was set ablaze in a planned manner,” Mishra added.

List of Lawyers Representing the Accused

According to reports, the accused were represented by the following senior Supreme Court advocates:

  • Kapil Sibal – Umar Khalid
  • Siddharth Dave – Sharjeel Imam
  • Abhishek Manu Singhvi – Gulfisha Fatima
  • Salman Khurshid – Shifa-ur-Rehman
  • Siddharth Agrawal – Miran Haider
  • Siddharth Luthra – Shadab Ahmed
  • Gautam Khajanchi – Mohammad Salim Khan

On behalf of the Delhi Police, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju represented the state in the Supreme Court.

Impact of the Riots

The North-East Delhi riots left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured. The violence erupted amid widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). Earlier, the Delhi High Court had denied bail to Khalid and other accused on September 2, 2025, prompting the appeal to the Supreme Court.
